Mastering Shot Shaping: A Guide to Perfect Draws and Fades in Golf
Having the ability to shape your shots in golf can elevate your game to new heights, offering a strategic advantage when navigating the golf course. Whether you're plotting a course around a tree or strategically steering clear of a water hazard, mastering the art of draws and fades can be a game-changer. Here's a guide to help you hit draws and fades like the elite.
How to Hit a Fade
A fade, for right-handed players, involves starting the ball left of the target and skilfully curving it back toward the intended target. This shot shape has gained popularity among top players who value precision over sheer distance.
· Align your feet, knees, hips, and shoulders left at setup.
· Position the clubface left of the target but more open in relation to the rest of your body.
· Adjust the ball position slightly forward in your stance to create an out-to-in club path.
Swing: Execute your swing following the line of your feet. These adjustments in setup and swing path should contribute to the desired fade. Sacrificing a bit of distance for enhanced control, a well-executed fade can be a useful tool in your golf game.
How to Hit a Draw
On the other hand, a draw requires an in-to-out club path with a closed clubface to start the ball right and bring it back toward the target.
· Aim your body right and position the ball slightly back in your stance.
· Create an in-to-out club path by aligning your swing along the line of your feet.
Swing: Execute your swing following the line of your feet. The combination of the club path and closed face will produce the desired right-to-left spin on the ball.
Consistency is Key
Achieving consistency in these shot shapes requires time on the range. Utilise targets for precise aim and relish the challenge of curving shots toward them. As you grow more comfortable, take your newly honed skills onto the course, ready to use draws and fades strategically when the situation calls for it.
Mastering draws and fades adds a layer of skill to your golf game, providing a precise approach to navigating the challenges on the course. With dedication and practice, you can confidently use these shot-shaping techniques, gaining a competitive edge that may help set you apart from your playing partners. Enjoy the journey of perfecting your draws and fades and watch your golf game reach new heights of precision and control.
